3D to 2D

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I chose to pick one of my paper city sculptures for my 3D to 2D assignment. I picked this structure because I thought it would be the most realistic and the most fun to work with. Ive always found birds interesting and have grown up with birdhouses all over my yard so I wanted to take something I made in class and turn it into something I can personally relate to. I used photoshop to change my 3D birdhouse into a 2D photo. I first chose my background, and I wanted something that would look proper holding my birdhouse. Second, I placed my photo of the birdhouse onto the background image, and I picked a bird to place inside my birdhouse. Finally, I created another birdhouse and changed the color and added another bird.

Touch by Diane Ackerman, Reading Response

Touch by Diane Ackerman is an extremely interesting article that focuses on the sense of touch and the prominent effect it has on individual’s lives. Throughout the article Diane explains why touch is so unique. She say that unlike the other four senses which each have an organ they can focus on, touch is everywhere we go. In one instance, Diane dives deep and explains the benefits of touch to a newborn. Diane says that newborns who are touched and in essence, loved more, are more responsive, alert, as well as more aware of their surroundings as they grow older in comparison to those who aren't. It’s crazy to sit back and realize how significant touch is in a world where things are so reliant on visuals, etc. Speaking of visuals, Diane in the segment makes the notion that touch becomes the overpowering sense when visuals are impaired or taken away for some reason. Reasons as to why we see blind students walking around Flagler’s campus with their sticks that guide their daily travel by means of touch. In addition, whenever humans are trapped by darkness, touch is the sense that leads people out.

Within Diane’s segment, there are many examples of experiments in which the sense of touch is illuminated. One study showed that by merely touching someone’s body with our hands, it can lower their blood pressure allowing for a more stress-free moment. Another study was associated with Duke University where they tested rats and the effect of touch on a mother’s pups. Furthermore, the study showed that after the mother nurtured and groomed the infant, chemical changes were apparent in the pup and once the mother and the pup were separated, the pups hormones dropped drastically. All in all, Diane makes it clear in her article that touch is an important element of life and without it, our lives would be not as ‘hands-on’ as they are today.

Art 21 Video Response, Janina Antoni

Janine’s art is inspired by daily activities such as eating, sleeping, etc. She utilizes these and transform them into creative pieces of art. Some of which, are her sculptures which were created by her own body. With a rare mix of both sculpture and ‘performance’ style art, Janine has an exceptional talent unlike any other. In this video, Janine walks over water, not literally, but by means of a tight rope. By doing so, I believe she not only hoped to overcome the impossible, but wanted to portray to viewers the concept of balance. Balance is a key notion in both art and other areas of life, mentally and physically. In addition to this, Janine’s idea of balance is also seen in her piece ‘Moor’. In it, she had to make a rope or in this case, a lifeline, of materials that could in turn, bond together individuals who were not connected beforehand.

Memento Reading Handout

The London Foundling hospital in the eighteenth century established a “for the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children” movement where the hospital would admit babies who were unwanted by their mothers/parents and take them in, nurturing them into a better life. When the hospital could no longer admit anymore, they established a lottery system in which only a certain number of applicants could drop off their son or daughter. After that happened and the government extended more financial aid to the hospital, the hospital went through a time known as ‘the great reception’ where all babies were accepted and sometimes even left in a basket at the hospital gates. Mothers would leave trinkets with their babies at the time that they left them so that if they ever were to see them again, they’d have a means of permission to have their child back again. Some of these trinkets that were used by mothers in the eighteenth century were used in various displays to attract donors.

Paper Themed Objects

ARTIST STATEMENT:

When told we had to create three objects out of paper using one theme and color I was super confused. How was I suppose to tackle a project only using paper and base it off a theme? This was foreign to me. After coming up with my theme of texture I thought to myself, there is so much I can do with this, having paper and making it textural. The first object I made was a diamond with crumpled up paper glued to it, I ended up liking it so much I did two more shapes (a circle and a triangle) using the same technique, these would be my three objects. When it came to adding color I use one technique before deciding to spray paint them all. I originally splattered differently colored ink onto the paper but the texture of the paper got lost in the ink, thats when I decided to spray paint. Overall I think the spray paint worked in my favor because the glossy look of the paint made my piece have tons of structure and texture.

Memento

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Memento was a project that made your brain think in a different way. As an artist we are made to think and create one way while this project made us think inside the box and create something out of a memory. When assigned this I believed it was going to be pretty easy considering we could only use three materials. Once it came down to getting started is when most of us had an artiest block. Memories have so many aspects to them how could we narrow down all our ideas into three materials. This project made us step outside our artist brains and think differently. For my memory I choose when my little sister had brain cancer and my family lived in the hospital to take care of her. For my memento I decided to make a cocoon like structure sowed together with an opening in the middle with yellow paint on the inside. The cocoon is to resemble the butterfly starting the next stage in its life, like my sister did by beating cancer. The stitching it to resemble her stitched and the yellow paint to resemble her favorite color at the time. Overall I enjoyed this project due to the drive to think differently.

5 Statements on Memento- Susan Stewart

1.     The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale.

My interpretation of this sentence is that the way we measure and scale things, is by comparing it to our body. For example if we are trying to see how tall something is you always stand next to it and say something along the lines of “well I’m 5 foot 5 and this door is twice my size so that would make the door about 10 foot 10”. Therefor the body is the primary mode of perceiving scale.

2.     Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience.

To have a capacity of objects means to have the maximum amount of those objects. So when it states that, that serves as traces and experience it’s saying that the more objects and souvenirs you have means you have that many more one of a kind experiences that no one can duplicate.

3.     The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body.

This statement says that a souvenir is a smaller object of some sort of 3D monument that can be made personal a small enough to be held. For example if I were to go to the Eiffel Tower I could get a souvenir that would be a handheld replica of the monument minus the people.

4.     Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss.

Nostalgia is a want for something that has happened in the past. So when is states that nostalgia cant happen without loss it means that you cant long for something from the past if its currently in your present.

5.     To have a souvenir of the exotic is to posses both a specimen and trophy.

This statement say that a souvenir is cool but to have one that hardly no one else has makes it that much better. As we all know having something that is one of a kind is hard to come by making it a trophy. Only you have this exotic souvenir and it’s a specimen of your memory and something you can treasure.
